Cowboy Curtis is a supporting character in Pee-Wee's Playhouse. He is portrayed by Laurence Fishburne.

He's the close friend of Pee-Wee's who is a prototypical '50s-style cowboy. Jambi once allowed Pee-Wee to give up his wish, allowing Cowboy Curtis to make a wish instead. In a manner typical of many cowboys and cowgirls (and Wonder Woman), he wields a lasso.

Once was asked out on a date by Miss Yvonne, but they never pursued a relationship afterwards because he would be written out of the show a few seasons later in the episode Camping Out.

Curtis is a African-American male who has dark skin and long femininely curly natural black hair. His cowboy attire consists of a brown hat, a brown and purple vest, a pink shirt, black gloves with a star patch, blue jeans, big boots, and leather gun pockets.

  • Curtis was absent for most of season 1, likely because he was filming A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors, at the time. The film stars Robert England as Freddy Krueger and Fishburn as Max
  • When Laurence auditioned for the role of Curtis, he saw him as a dark and gritty character equivalent to a black John Wayne. Paul Reubens explained to Laurence after the audition to "lighten up".
  • In The Pee-wee Herman Show (on Broadway), Curtis is played by Phil LaMarr instead of Laurence Fishburne. Phil LaMaar is mostly well-known for his role as Hermes Conrad in the animated series Futurama, his role as Wilt in Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, the voice of Aquaman and Green Lantern John Stewart in Injustice 2, the voice of Kotal Kahn in Mortal Kombat X, the voice of Jack from Samurai Jack, and the voice of Steve and Kotaro from The Loud House.
