- Mrs. Rene, and Miss Yvonne visit in this episode. Cowboy Curtis calls on the Picturephone.
- Mrs. Rene is still in costume for her Picturephone call when she retrieves the secret word.
- Joey Miyashima played Oki Doki, Pee-wee's pen pal from Tokyo.
- This character may or may not be the same Oki from Reba Eats and Pterri Runs, however.
- Pee-wee has another Japanese pen pal (as seen in the first season's Rainy Day episode)—Aiko.
- Conky says hello to Oki in this episode; earlier, Globey mentions that Mr. Mitsumi works in the automotive industry, at the time one of the most growing industries in Japan. It's still one of the most profitable industries in that country, along with robotics, IoT (internet of things) and electronics.
- The Flowers, apparently knowing Japanese courtesy, bow in this episode.
- The secret word in this episode is PLACE, which is said and screamed at six times, counting one time in Japanese.
- Several commercials for a Japanese stockbroker firm, Wako Securities (who would later merge with New Japan Securities in 2000 to form Shinko Securities; now part of the Mizuho Financial Group) featuring Pee-Wee was produced the same year that this episode was filmed. [1]
- Oki Doki's name is a play on the phrase "okie dokie", which is one of the many catchphrases of Mario, a character from Nintendo's Mario video game franchise
- Jambi does not appear in this episode.
- Water is claimed by Randy to not be a snack, but Herman rightfully points out to him that flavored or not it's very important to drink it.
- Mrs. Rene does the secret word routine in this episode.
- Gamera is a Japanese tokusatsu TV show from the 1970s, conveniently dubbed into English.
- Though they said Gamera taught them a lesson about the environment, they didn't show how he taught them that lesson.
- When Oki says the secret word in Japanese (tokoro), a kanji symbol for the secret word "処" flashes when everybody screams.
- When Oki shows Pee-wee sushi, the talking fish jokingly sing, "If you knew sushi, like I knew sushi..." a parody of the Eddie Cantor song "If You Knew Susie".
- Pee-Wee has a hard time saying “sayonara”, saying “shana-latta” instead, yet has no problem saying it when he reads Oki’s pen pal letter, as well as Aiko's litter to him in Rainy Day.
- The cartoon that plays is Sinkin' in the Bathtub, which was the very first short in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes series, and also the first appearance of Bosko and Honey.
